The Ministry of Higher & Tertiary Education, Science & Technology Development, established a primary teachers college at the site of the former Madziwa Mine situated 120 km north east of Harare in Shamva District of Mashonaland Central Province. This is within the ministry’s mandate to provide manpower in terms of the Manpower Development Act of 1996, Part (II). A great move indeed for Mashonaland Central Province.
The closure of Madziwa Mine left massive infrastructure idle. This included buildings; storerooms, sheds, houses and services such as electricity, piped water, tarred roads and sewage system. The Bindura Nickel Corporation (BNC), the owners of the former mine decided to donate the whole property to the government of Zimbabwe for use by the Ministry of Higher & Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development. The mine authorities renovated students’ accommodation whilst Humana People to People (D. A. P. P.), a Danish Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) refurbished the existing buildings into lecture rooms and administration block. The Ministry of Higher & Tertiary Education, Science & Technology Development rehabilitated the former beer hall into a well-furnished kitchen and dining hall.
The college opened its doors to the first intake of one hundred and twenty-five (125) students, twenty (20) lecturers and ninety-two (92) ancillary staff on 9 May 2005. To date the college has had 17 Intakes whereby twelve intakes who did general course have graduated and Intake 13 General course and Intake 1 Early Childhood Development (ECD) will graduate this year 2019. The current Enrolment (Intakes 14, 15, 16 & 17 General course and Intakes 2,3, 4 & 5 ECD) stands at one thousand eight hundred and thirteen (1813) whereby one thousand three hundred and eighteen (1318) are doing general course and four hundred and ninety-five (495)
