The department of Professional Foundations has an essential component for students doing a Diploma in Education programme which follows a 3-3-3 model (Structured as follows; three terms first residential, three terms Teaching Practice and three terms final residential).
The department is made up of five areas namely:
• Theory of Education. (TOE)
• Professional Studies Syllabus C.(PSC)
• Teaching Practice. (TP)
• Early Childhood Development. (ECD)
• Professional Studies Syllabus A (PSA)
The main thrust of these foundations is to lay the critical professional foundation of the teacher.
This section is a combination of six foundations which are Philosophy of Education, Psychology of Education, Sociology of Education, Inclusive Education curriculum issues and Educational Administration. These foundations provide the theoretical framework, that is, educational issues which form the lenses though which a teacher should navigate the teaching profession.
Every teacher should have research skills which are critical in the teaching profession. The section through (PSC) develop these skills. Students are required to do research as a course where contemporary research skills are developed. This is an area which is examinable on its own. This is an area which sets the base for the student’s professional growth. As a department, we are proud to be associated with such a significant section.
Teaching practice as a section is responsible for preparation, deployment and developing the practical teaching skills of every college student. This is also an examinable area on its own when students are out on attachment. This is a critical and sensitive area to the department for this is where a real teacher should be realised. It is therefore in this regard that the department ensures that all necessary preparations and activities are carried out to ensure the realisation of a quality teacher. A quality teacher can survive under various conditions in the world.
The Early Childhood Development (ECD) programme at Madziwa Teachers College commenced on 29 February 2016 with an enrolment of 102 students
It is a broad area is composed of:
• Theory of Early Childhood Development (TECD);
• Professional Studies Syllabus A (PSA);
• Mathematics and Science;
• Expressive Arts;
• Language Arts;
• Social Sciences;
• Teaching Practice (TP); and
• Professional Studies Syllabus C (PSC).
Just like their counterparts in the General course, the focus of Theory of Early Childhood Development (TECD), Professional Studies Syllabus A (PSA), Teaching Practice (TP); and Professional Studies Syllabus C (PSC). is the same:providing a well highly skilled teacher guided by the professional foundations and able to operate under different conditions in the world. The department is happy to be associated with this section for it is concerned about the proper development of a human being at an early age hoping that this is done properly so that human beings display in adulthood what was mostly impacted on them at an early age.
This course is offered to all the students and is designed to develop the professional dimension of a practising teacher. The course comprises Curriculum Theory, Classroom Management and School Administration, Educational Media and Technology, Pedagogical Issues in Primary Education, Inclusive Education and Contemporary Issues in Education.
In addition, the PSA section is responsible for the implementation of the Professional Studies Syllabus C (PSC).
